3 Lighting Tips for a Living Room That Feels Bigger and Brighter

House

Your living room is one of the rooms in your home that sees the most traffic on a daily basis. It is where you and your family gather to spend time together and unwind at the end of the day and where you and guests gather when you are entertaining. Depending on the layout of your home, your living room might also be the main room through which you walk to get to the rest of your home.

With so many purposes, the last thing that you want is for your living room to feel small, closed off, and dark. You might think that you have to resign yourself to such a living room because of a lack of space. Thankfully, even smaller living rooms can be made to feel and look bigger and brighter with the right lighting in place.

If you are looking to make your living room feel bigger and brighter but aren’t able to start knocking down walls, here are a few things that you can do regarding the lighting in the space that can make a big difference.

1. Start With Natural Light

The first thing to address when it comes to the lighting in your living room is the amount of natural light that it gets. Natural light is going to be your best friend when your goal is to make the space feel bigger and brighter.

If you aren’t working with much natural light in general because of a lack of windows, you should consider getting a quote to see how much it might cost to have some installed. If you already have windows but they are on the smaller side, some larger windows can really work wonders in your living room.

There are a number of options regarding the style and size of windows, and that can fit any budget. Reach out to a windows Dudley company for some of the best options. Not only will new windows brighten up your living room, but they can also up your home’s curb appeal as well.

2. Layer the Lighting

One great way to add an extra dimension to your living room is to layer the lighting. This means that there should be a few different levels to your lighting, starting with the ceiling and going down. You can accomplish this with some recessed lighting and strategically placed lamps.

Table lamps work as the ideal lower layer when you are using this tactic. Make sure that your lamps are spaced out to maximize their effect on the space.

3. Light Up Your Wall Hangings

If your living room has some interesting artwork or wall hangings, consider giving them a spotlight as well. This will help to create a bright focal point on your walls and bring new focus to your photos and other wall hangings. It will also create additional dimensions that will instantly make the space feel bigger and more open.

If you have a particularly large piece of art on your wall, this will help to make it more of a centerpiece in the room.
